Sitaram Yechury Rahul GandhiYechury rejects the idea of Rahul being PM candidate

Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of CPI(M), on Tuesday, attended a meeting with DMK president M.K. Stalin after which he addressed journalists.

When asked about projecting Rahul Gandhi as the opposition’s PM candidate, Yechury said, “India is a Parliamentary democracy and not a Presidential form. Our Constitution is a Parliamentary democracy and only elected members of Parliament can elect the Prime Minister. Not you and me.”On the question of whether the CPI(M) would be part of Congress and Trinamool alliance, he said that alliances in India would take place at the state level first. He further added,

“On that basis, the national alliance will emerge. In Tamil Nadu, we have decided that we will be with the DMK-led front in the forthcoming elections.”

Before Yechury, BSP and TDP also out-rightly rejected the idea of Rahul being the opposition’s PM candidate.
