The Uttar Pradesh Government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has on Monday, months ahead of Lok Sabha Polls 2019 – announced a populist move to grant a pension to ‘sadhus’ in Uttar Pradesh. As per the details available, the pension will be provided to Hindu seers who are above the age of 60.

The pension would be provided under the state pension scheme for senior citizens. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the government would set up special camps across the state till January 30 to help sadhus enroll for pension under the scheme.

CM Yogi Adityanath on Monday announced to increase its monthly pension for all destitute person from ₹400 to ₹500, an increment of ₹100.

The state government has decided that all destitute persons (including women, disabled etc) will get a pension of Rs 500 per month as compared to Rs 400 earlier,” CM Yogi said, adding that Hindu seers above 60 will also be covered under this pension scheme.

The announcement has been made at a time when Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh is hosting Kumbh Mela 2019 where lakhs of Hindu seers are attending the religious event. Yogi government plans to hold Cabinet meet in Prayagraj at Kumbh Mela, Ministers to take a dip in the holy river

This measure comes immediately after the Centre on Sunday directed all educational institutes and Universities to implement the 10 percent reservation for economically weak in the general category in the upcoming Educational session.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties have alleged the Hindu appeasement charge against the Yogi Adityanath government after the move was announced.

Samajwadi Party leader and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said it is an appeasement move ahead of the General Elections.
