The Opposition parties in Mizoram – Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the Indian National Congress (INC) on Thursday formally announced common candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls and a by-election to State Assembly.
As per the announcement, Both ZPM and Congress have fielded Lalnghingolva Hmar for the lone Parliamentary Seat. While the duo also announced Lalbuanga Sailo as their common in state Assembly by-elections.
Briefing the presser on the occasion where both – Hmar and Sailo – names were announced, ZPM leader K Sapdanga said we (ZPM-Congress) have joined hands in a run-up to the General Elections 2019 to take on BJP and its partners.
Joint Candidate for Lok Sabha Polls Lalnghingolva Hmar is currently serving as an honorary secretary of the Mizoram Football Association. He is also a renowned sports reporter. While Lalbuanga Sailo is a retired government Official.
Hmar in the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls is slated to take on Mizo National Front (MNF)’s C Lalrosanga. The ruling MNF has fielded Lalrosanga on the lone seat of the seat. He is the former DG of Doordarshan. While MNF has announced the name of Zothantluanga as its candidate for the state by-elections.
In 2014 General Elections, Congress’s Candidate CL Raula bagged the lone seat with over 48 per cent of votes. While in last year Assembly polls, Mizoram National Front totally dethroned the incumbent Indian National Congress. MNF bagged 26 seats while Congress was reduced to just 5 seats against its 34 seats in last assembly polls.
Election Commission had on March 10 declared schedule for General Elections 2019. Polling of all 543 Seats will take place in 7 phases starting from April 11. Results for the crucial Lok Sabha Polls will be announced on May 23 four days after the 7th phase of voting.
Mizoram will poll in the first phase on April 11 for both Lok Sabha and State by-election.
