Facebook Messenger just got darker. Dark mode is now rolling out to all iOS and Android users around the globe. In March this year, that feature was opened up to all users, however, it was technically still an Easter egg – it had to be sneakily activated by sending a message containing a crescent moon emoji. That workaround is no longer necessary.

Now, Facebook has made things official and has announced that the new dark mode theme is available for everyone around the globe. And to enable it, just tap on your profile picture in Facebook Messenger, and turn on dark mode from there.

“[W]e are excited to announce that everyone around the world will be able to activate dark mode in Messenger with a simple toggle switch from settings,” Messenger product manager Bridget Pujals wrote in a blog post. “Dark mode cuts down the glare from your phone for use in low light situations, so you can use the Messenger features you love no matter when or where you are.”

Besides being a bit easier on the eyes, Messenger’s new dark theme should slightly extend the battery life of phones with OLED screens, like Apple’s latest-gen iPhone lineup (iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max), Samsung’s Galaxy series, and the LG G8 and V40. That’s because these screens can turn each individual pixel on and off without affecting the pixels directly adjacent, saving power.

If you are all in when it comes to a darker theme in apps, then I highly recommend that you give dark mode a shot. It will, in some ways, actually improve and refresh your existing experience, especially at night when every bit of white shade can stab you in your eyes and force you to put down your smart device.
