Facebook Messenger is used by everyone to stay in touch with their Facebook friends. However, Facebook Messenger has announced a new update according to which, the users will now be able to forward messages to only five people or groups at one time. This decision has been taken to decrease the spread of misinformation and fake news on social networking sites. This feature was first introduced on WhatsApp in the year 2018 and later, WhatsApp decreased the limit of forwarded messages to one person or group at a time. The new update of Facebook Messenger will also add some privacy features like the facility of app lock on iOS devices.

In case if a user tries to forward a message to more than five people or groups at a time, a message will pop up on his mobile screen that would say – “forwarding limit reached”. Jay Sullivan, who is the Director of Product Management for Messenger Privacy and Safety stated that the control on the limit of forwarding messages is a useful step to stop the spread of misinformation and harmful content. The feature was tested internally in the month of March and the update will be rolled out in a phased manner in the upcoming days.

This new update has been added at a very crucial time when the dates of New Zealand and US elections and the it will work similarly like it did on WhatsApp from the year 2018. Sources have also said that along with putting a limit on forwarding messages, Facebook Messenger is also trying to put limitations on one message being forwarded frequently. A message label named “Frequently Forwarded” was added in Messenger last year and it decreased the limit of frequently forwarded messages to only one person or group.
