Instagram Recovery Account

Instagram is reportedly testing easier ways to recover your hijacked account. This is a new in-app account recovery process that should make it easier to recover an account.  Presently if you have lost your account, you have to either wait for an email or fill out a support form, the updated approach uses the app to ask for different types of info (such as your original email address or phone number or in some cases even an alternative one if you provided it in the first place). You then get a six-digit code sent to the contact info of your choice, and Instagram will then prevent hackers from using email or phone number codes to take over your account from a different device.

But now this new method is intended to ensure account recovery even if the hacker alters the username and contact information linked to the account. “With this process, the photo-messaging app also intends to prevent hackers from using email or phone number codes to take over accounts from different devices,” the report said.

However, if in case the hacker has taken over both the email address account and even the mobile phone number tied to the Instagram account, the recovery process will take much longer and involve a human review team. “For edge cases like this, we will still have the option to contact the community operations team who can reassign an account to a secure email address,” Instagram’s spokesperson said.

The Facebook-owned social media service also seems to be introducing another safeguard feature, which likely involves protecting usernames, to stop account hijacking. Even if a hacker successfully takes over an account and changes the username, you don’t need to worry anymore. According to Instagram, victims will still be able to access their old handle for a while, which in turn means that it can’t be claimed by someone else.

“This is available to all Android users and is currently rolling out on iOS,” the platform said. “With this feature, we give the account holder the security of knowing that their username will not be available to be claimed by someone else for a period of time following any changes.”
