Instagram’s latest Stories sticker now allows people to ask their followers to join a new group chat and then gives the person posting the Story the power to select who can join and who can’t. The new feature is called the chat sticker which joins a bunch of other stickers Instagram has introduced to Stories, including polls, question boxes, mentions, locations, hashtags, and countdowns, among others. The chat sticker is relatively straightforward, and Instagram is hoping it offers a solution to people who want to have a big group conversation about something or for making plans.

The company announced the change on Twitter today. This feature will be available soon and users will be able to add a “join chat” sticker to their Stories. If followers tap the sticker, they’ll be added to a private group chat — though the author will have the ability to approve or deny requests.

How it works:

The new sticker, rolling out to the app now will appear alongside the rest of the Stories stickers. Once you choose it by tapping it, you can add a text prompt about what you want to chat about. Friends who view the post tap the “join chat” option for the chance to be in the group DM. The person who posted the sticker gets to control who can join and can end the chat whenever they want.

In the promo video of the new feature, Instagram shows how the chat sticker is being used for things like planning parties, events, trips, and more. Using Instagram’s Close Friends feature, you will also be able to limit who sees Stories showing the chat sticker.
