Google Messages, like so many of Google’s apps, now has a beta program. It’s totally free to join and offers you an earlier look at the new features before the rest of the world gets them.

The formal announcement of the new open beta testing program comes via a post by a Google employee to the Messages help community, together with a formal request that participants not “publicize or share the features you’re testing until they’re publicly available” — like anyone is going to adhere to that. A help page regarding the program with details for opting in, out, and how to send feedback regarding the app was also created.”

To join in the beta program all you’ll need to do is:

  • Navigate to this page and click the big obvious blue button to become a tester.
  • History being any indicator, versions of apps distributed by Google in the testing program can have pretty major bugs, so don’t opt in if the reliability of the Messages app is a firm requirement.
  • Once you’ve signed up for the beta program, all future updates to Messages will be a part of the beta track.

However, there aren’t any new Messages beta app updates going live quite yet, but that could change soon. Beta updates can have bugs, and that’s something to think about before you enroll in this Messages app beta, but it’s also pretty exciting to try out new features before most other people get them.
