Harry Brook’s Maiden ODI Century and Will Jacks’ Brilliant 84 Propel England to Thrilling Comeback, Ending Australia’s 14-Match Winning Streak.
Series Overview:
Australia is on a tour of England, playing a series that includes three T20Is and five ODIs. The T20I series ended in a tie, but Australia dominated the ODIs, winning the first two matches.
Third ODI – Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street:
England won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Australia’s Innings:
Matthew Short and Mitchell Marsh opened for Australia, with Short looking dangerous early on. However, Jofra Archer quickly took his wicket.
Steven Smith joined Marsh at the crease, and they began building a solid partnership. But Brydon Carse disrupted their momentum by taking Marsh’s wicket.
Cameron Green arrived to support Smith, who completed his half-century. As the partnership flourished, England’s bowlers fought back. Bethell dismissed Green, and Jacks took the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne shortly after.
Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell added crucial runs, with Carey reaching his fifty. Despite losing Maxwell, Carey forged another important partnership with Aaron Hardie. He was eventually run out in the final over, as Australia finished their innings at 304/7.
England’s Innings:
Phil Salt and Ben Duckett opened for England, but Mitchell Starc rattled the top order early, taking both openers in quick succession.
Will Jacks and Harry Brook came together and started a vital recovery, building a strong partnership. Both reached their half-centuries and continued piling up the runs.
Cameron Green finally broke the stand by dismissing Jacks, followed by the wicket of Jamie Smith soon after.
Brook, however, continued his stellar form, reaching his maiden ODI century. Liam Livingstone provided solid support at the other end.
Rain interrupted play in the 37.4 over, and England was declared the winner via the DLS method, marking a memorable victory.
Harry Brook, on his maiden century:
“It feels incredible to get my first ODI century, especially in a game where we needed to bounce back. Jacks was brilliant as well, and we knew we had to take the game deep to have a chance.”
England captain Jos Buttler:
“I’m proud of how the boys fought back today. Harry and Will were exceptional, and the bowlers did well to contain a strong Australian side. It was a true team effort, and weโre back in the series.”
