On the ninth day of Deaflympics 2017 held in Samsun, Indian athletes opened the medal tally for India as Virender Singh won gold in wrestling and Diksha Dagar got silver in golf. Two bronze medals were also added by Ajay Kumar (65kg) and Sumit Dahiya (97kg) winning matches in their respective categories.

Virender Singh bagged the gold medal in 74kg freestyle wrestling by beating Shakro Chakvetadze of Georgia 18-9 in the final. Earlier he had defeated Batbaatar Shirendev (Mongolia) 6-4 and Maksim Slapic (Belarus) 6-2 in the semifinals and quarterfinals respectively.

Ajay Kumar (65kg) defeated Argishti Babayan of Armenia by a technical fall in the match for the bronze medal after he lost to China’s Dorjdagua Chinzorig in the quarterfinals. Sumit (97kg) after he got defeated by Ichan Citak of Turkey won the match against Iran’s Mohammad Rasoul Ghamar technical fall, hence, bagging the bronze medal.

Diksha Dagar missed the gold in the final round by losing to Kaylin Yost of USA in golf. She was seeded directly into the semifinals. India now has one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
