The third Test match was played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first.
New Zealand First Innings
Tom Latham and Devon Conway opened the innings, but Akash Deep gave India an early breakthrough, dismissing Devon. Will Young came into bat, but wickets kept falling at the other end until Daryl Mitchell joined him. The pair formed a crucial partnership, each scoring half-centuries, helping New Zealand post a total of 235 runs. Ravindra Jadeja claimed a five-wicket haul, while Washington Sundar took four wickets.
India First Innings
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma opened India’s innings, but Rohit was dismissed early. Shubman Gill came in and, alongside Rishabh Pant, stabilized the innings. Both batsmen scored half-centuries, with Gill playing a remarkable knock of 90 runs. India ended their innings at 263 runs, with Ajaz Patel once again wreaking havoc, taking a five-wicket haul.
New Zealand Second Innings
Tom Latham and Devon Conway failed to provide a solid start as Indian bowlers dominated early. Will Young played a vital innings of 51 runs, helping New Zealand to 174 runs. Ravindra Jadeja took another five-wicket haul, putting India in a favorable position.
India Second Innings
Chasing a target of 147 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma opened for India but were soon dismissed. Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips kept the pressure on, making it difficult for any batsman to settle. Rishabh Pant played a brief but impactful innings before being dismissed. Ajaz took six wickets in total, while Glenn claimed three, restricting India to 121 runs.
New Zealand won the match by 25 runs, securing a historic series victory and becoming the first team ever to whitewash India on home soil.
India Captain, Rohit Sharma: “This series defeat is a tough pill to swallow. Credit to New Zealand for the way they played; they deserved to win. We made some mistakes and couldn’t capitalize on key moments, which cost us dearly. We have to analyze what went wrong, especially with our batting in crucial phases. We’ve been a strong team at home for years, and we need to work on the areas where we fell short. We’ll bounce back stronger.”
