When the issue of appointing a new coach of Indian cricket team, former India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar decided to step in and asked cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri to send his application for the role. It seemed that Shastri was in no mood to participate in the race for this post, maybe because of the fact that he had been ignored last year in front of Kumble.
However, after Sachin convinced him, he again agreed to once again come up with his CV and file the application. As a member of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), Tendulkar also took into account that Kohli also wanted Ravi Shastri as a coach.
In 2016 when the CAC was appointing the Indian coach, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman stood at Kumble’s side while Tendulkar was in favour of Shastri. Ravi Shastri till now has been playing the role of Team Director.
Despite Kumble’s successful term as a coach, the fact of the matter is that Shastri as Team India director following the exit of Duncan Fletcher as coach had played a crucial role in keeping the team together.
