Former Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has backed Sourav Ganguly for the post of ICC’s chairman. He stated that Ganguly’s “astute cricket brain” and vast experience as an administrator make his “very suitable” for the role. He also said that the BCCI president has an international mind-set, which is necessary to remain unbiased.

Sangakkara also admitted that he is a big fan of the former Indian captain. Sangakarra is the current Chairman of the Marylebone Cricket Club. He said that Ganguly has the potential for building relations which is vital for the influential position in cricket’s governing body.

“I have seen his work even before he took over as the BCCI president, even before administration and coaching, and how he has built relationships with players around the world, his standing in the MCC cricket committee,” he said.

Former BCCI Chief Shashank Manohar had stepped down as the chairman of ICC earlier this month. Hong Kong’s Imran Khwaja has taken the charge as interim chairman of the ICC. Khwaja was Manohar’s deputy in the ICC.

Former South Africa Captain and Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) director of cricket, Graeme Smith has also backed Ganguly for the role.

Ganguly recently stated that he is no hurry to take up the post of Chairman of ICC.
