Sania Mirza

Indian tennis players showed fantastic performance at Wimbledon on Wednesday. Unseeded Divij Sharan and Purav Raja reached the second round of the tournament for the first time in the men’s doubles event. Though Sania Mirza along with her partner Kirsten Flipkens easily won their first match of the women’s doubles to enter the second round, Raja and Divij had to play hard to win the match.

Divij Sharan and Purav Raja had their first match against the British-Portuguese pair of Kyle Edmund and Joao Sousa. They booked their seat in further round winning the hard fought match 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 7-6 (8-6). They are ranked 57th in ATP double’s rankings. After losing the second set 3-6, the pair played well to break the opposition serve in the second game of the third set and maintained the single break lead to win the third set 6-4.

13th seeded pair of Sania and Flipkens defeated the Japanese-Chinese combination of Naomi Osaka and Shuai Zhang 6-4 6-3. It took them 72 minutes to defeat their opponents and enter the next round of the Wimbledon.
