Virender Sehwag

After the resignation of Kumble, which was followed by a lot of drama, the Indian cricket team support staff is finally reorganised with Ravi Shastri appointed as the head coach by BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) and Bharat Arun as the bowling coach. Though once, former opener Virender Sehwag was being regarded as the strongest contender in the race, he was left empty-handed at the end. On Tuesday, at a promotional event in Mumbai, Sehwag chose to be silent and did not answer any of the questions on the disputable selection of head coach.

Sehwag was among the candidates who were shortlisted by the CAC comprising of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman. Also, Sehwag, Ravi Shastri and Tom Moody were being regarded as the top-3 candidates for the post.

Sehwag has always been known to speak his thoughts without any fear and probably that is why his tweets are so famous and he is named as ‘Twitter king’. However on Tuesday when he was asked that whether he was told about a separate batting and bowling coach, he said, “If you ask questions on ‘Umeed India’ (the show he is promoting) then I will answer. Thanks.”

He further discussed the difficulties faced by the Indian athlete face for preparing for big events like Olympics and World Championships. He said, “My struggle was nothing in comparison to them. For me cricketing facilities were available at every corner, there are 1000s of academies in Delhi where (one) gets facilities and equipments. There is no struggle for us cricketers in front of them.”

Sehwag also mentioned about Dattu, who at one time did not know swimming before finishing 13th in the Rio Olympics last year.
