The 1st test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle ended on the fourth day as the Sri Lankan batting order in the second innings collapsed under 245 runs. Playing with just nine players, Sri Lankans were given a target of 550.

The day started with India continuing with their second innings. Indian skipper Virat Kohli completed his 17th Test century in the first half hour of the fourth day. Ajinkya Rahane remained not out at 23 along with Kohli at 103 as India decided to declare their innings at a score of 240 for 3 wickets and with a lead of 549 runs. Earlier in the second innings, Abhinav Mukund played a spectacular knock of 81 runs.

Coming out to chase 550 runs, Sri Lanka lost two early wickets of Upul Tharanga and Danushka Gunathikala. However, Dimuth Karunaratne tried hard to establish a long partnership and scored 97 runs, but was dismissed by Ashwin. Jadeja and Ashwin both took three wickets each, whereas Shami an Umesh Yadav got one wicket.
