Bengaluru-based video sharing startup Clip app has acquired Clorik, a crowdsourced content discovery platform for Indian languages, for an undisclosed amount. The Clorik team will work on the Clip app to improve its products after the acquisition. The future of the Clorik app remains undecided as of yet.

Clip App was founded by Nav Agrawal, Ashish Gupta, and Swapnil Upadhyay in March 2017. It provides a platform for its users to create, watch and download videos. It also provides the option to share short video clips on WhatsApp and Facebook.

The app is available in various Indian languages to reach a wider audience including Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu and Punjabi.

With over 10 million users and over 3 million videos on the platform, Clip app has raised over $7 million from investors including Matrix Partners India, India Quotient, and Shunwei Capital.

On the other hand, Clorik is a social media platform that helps the users to discover content based on their language and interest preference. It was founded by IIIT-Allahabad alumni Shivani Maheshwari and Sunil Kumar in 2016 with its headquarter in Bengaluru. It is currently working on training its natural language processing engine to understand the Hindi language before it can focus on training its platform to understand different languages.

It provides various categories for users to explore including news, Bollywood, humour, poetry, cooking, puzzles, arts, gaming, business, fitness, technology, and sports among many others. The startup claims to have more than 100,000 app downloads with around 53% of its userbase consisting of women.

The new partnership between Clip app and Clorik will help Clip app to expand its user base and strengthen its technology platform to serve vernacular users more efficiently.

Other startups catering to the vernacular audience include Sharechat, Vokal, NewsDog, among many others. Startups in this domain are only expected to increase considering the local language internet users are expected makeup 75% of the overall internet users by 2021.

In a recent news, local news startup Lokal has raised an undisclosed amount of funds from India Quotient.
