Flipkart

After acquiring eBay India, the homegrown e-commerce platform Flipkart seems to be making use of it now. As per the reports, the products of Fipkart will now be available in about 200 countries.

This is happening as a part of the strategic partnership with eBay, which was one of the investor in the company $1.4 billion funding round, along with Microsoft and Tencent.

Under Flipkart’s global programme, the sellers will now be able to sell to customers globally. The programme aims to push ‘Made in India’ products such as saris, jewellery, handicrafts, accessories among other categories. While customers will shop through eBay’s platform, Flipkart will fulfill the orders in partnership with logistics carriers.

Initially, the program will only be available to the ‘Gold’ rated sellers on its platform. However, as time goes by, the service will also be open for all other sellers on the marketplace.

Anil Goteti, who recently took over eBay India’s business, said,

This is a large opportunity for us. We are looking to build on it with our massive seller base, the expertise of eBay India along with Flipkart’s technology and marketplace strength. We want to encourage Indian manufacturing especially in categories such as jewellery, lifestyle, saris and other made in India products.

In this regard, Flipkart is following the step of Amazon, which had earlier launched its global seller programme. More than 23,000 Indian sellers are using the Amazon’s Global Seller program to sell globally.

While Amazon and Flipkart are the only e-commerce platforms in India that are currently engaged in cross-border shipping, this won’t be the case for long time. As per the reports, Paytm Mall — the e-commerce entity of Paytm, is all set to launch cross-border shipping of Indian brands to China. Notably, the company is backed by Alibaba — one of the largest e-commerce player globally.
