Uber, an on-demand cab service provider platform has laid off around 400 employees out of 1,200 globally, including in India and South Asia, cited ET.

While, the mass layoff took place just two months after its initial public offering, this had been done to cut costs and streamline operations.    

According to the sources, about 20-25 employees in Uber India have been affected by the action. They were largely in the central marketing team, based out of Gurugram. The cuts have been made across creative, brand, performance marketing and analytics teams,the source added.

Uber is an American multinational transportation network company which is based-out of San Francisco. It offers services that include peer-to-peer ride sharing, ride service hailing, food delivery, and a bicycle-sharing system.

Furthermore, in India, the marketing operations are led by Manisha Lath Gupta, who joined the company in May 2019. She reports to Jill Hazelbaker, senior vice president, communications and public policy at Uber.

Gupta has four direct reports, including research and analytics, product marketing brand, and creative team heads. They manage a team of 4-12 people across levels.

Apart from Uber, there are other significant startups in the category, which includes Ola CabsLyft, CurbDidiChuxingGrab, and many more including local taxis as well.
