Zomato, One of India’s leading online food delivery services had received 6 lakh orders on the day of the FIFA final, breaking all records. It also crossed the milestone of 13 million monthly orders, during this world cup season. Zomato also claimed to receive 125 orders per second during the halftime, when France led Croatia 2-1.

“Sunday was a great day for sports enthusiasts and overall growth trends have been fantastic. While the top cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad — are growing really fast, growth in tier-II and tier-III cities has also been really encouraging for us,” said Zomato chief executive Mohit Gupta.

Delhi was the city with the most orders on the night of the finale, clocking over 1,00,000 orders for Zomato. It was closely followed by Mumbai and Bengaluru, coming second and third, respectively. While metro cities emerged top in overall orders, there was a remarkable growth in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, boosting the overall daily sales for Zomato.

While looking at the most ordered food, Zomato’s data show that the most ordered food item was the chicken wings, clocking three times more orders compared to any regular Sunday night. Biryani and Pizza were the other two most ordered food items.

While Zomato received 13 million monthly orders for the world cup season, it had only received 5.5 million order during the month of March. This is a monumental growth rate for Zomato, while it looks to penetrate further into the country.

Zomato is currently available in 24 countries globally covering 10,000 cities, serving over 50 million users a month. In India, it is present in 21 cities, helping over 19 million users to discover new restaurants.

Other food delivery services like Foodpanda, Swiggy, along with pubs and bars in general also received more orders than usual, with top restaurants and pubs reporting over 25% sales, compared to a regular Sunday night. The world cup season has been particularly good for the food industry overall.
