Recently announced Nokia 8 is making a huge sound around the country. Some are saying, that the Nokia 8 is over priced and others are accepting the fact that, the device is rightly priced as it caters to the premium segment.

Comparing Nokia with smartphones like Mi 6 or OnePlus 5 doesn’t make any sense. How does Nokia 8 stand against premium-tier flagships like LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8, HTC U11 and Sony XZ Premium

Display: It’s hard to differentiate between all these tough contenders, in one hand Galaxy 8’s AMOLED display with dual edges offers vibrant colours and brightness, on the other hand, Xperia XZ’s display offers more pixel density and mobile HDR+ mode, first ever in a smartphone. All 5 devices offer splendid display and it’s very hard to choose one from this set.

Camera: Samsung Galaxy S8 was one of the best-rated camera (borrowed from its predecessor S7), However, recent smartphones have showcased how dual camera setup is better than the mono sensor setup. Considering Nokia’s latest addition to the #Bothi feature, Nokia looks like a true champion with OIS and bokeh effects. We cannot even neglect the HTC U11 camera, as it has scored 90 in DxOMark camera benchmarking app, U11’s camera also offers 4K video recording capability, with the RAW format (uncompressed). Finally, the LG G6’s dual camera setup does some magic as well, the device offers 125-degree wide-angle lens, that means one can get wider pictures than any other smartphone out there. The G6 also has Quick social network access, using the feature one can directly share an image to any of the social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

Battery: All 5 devices have a similar battery capacity of ~3000 mAh, as all these devices support fast charging, every one of these phones performs well. However, considering Xperia XZ’s 4K screen, the battery may not last longer compared to other devices. Considering the fact that Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is built on 10 nm FinFET architecture, these chipsets will be energy efficient (except LG G6’s SD 820 that is built on older 14 nm architecture. The only device that supports induction based charging is the Samsung Galaxy S8, others just offer either Qualcomm Quick charge 3.0 or newer version.

RAM & Storage: These two features are something that the market is seriously considering. There are many smartphones out there that feature 8 GB RAM, which is nothing to do with the phone’s performance or speeding up the things. As an amount of RAM increases, the battery does drain for some extent. Considering the Android’s eco-systems 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM will be more than enough for at least a few years from now onwards. All of these devices offer at least 64 GB of onboard storage, being equipped with the additional SD card slot is an added bonus for the flagship smartphones.

Operating system: C in the bracket depicts customised and S depicts stock. I always have the soft corner towards the stock Android operating system, as they will be the first devices to receive latest updates as soon they are released. However, all these devices will receive next major Android update for sure. Having a customised operating system is not always bad, as few features are not available in stock Android. For instance, Galaxy Note 2 is the first phone to offer dual app support right before Android Lollipop. However, sometimes these highly customised skins do make the phone slow over the time frame and in terms of performance, the device will struggle even if it has high-end hardware and latest software.

Materials used: Other than plastic, everything looks premium on smartphones (make them look premium) these devices either flaunt metal-metal design or metal-glass design. Nokia 8 and Sony XZ premium offers all metal unibody, which means the device can hold against the minor drops, however, prone to scratches even with the key in your pocket. The other three (LG G6, Galaxy S8 and HTC U11) offers glass rear panel with different colour variation, Glass holds against the normal scratches and day to day usage, however, an accidental fall can either crack your display or back glass panel. We are also seeing more premium materials like Ceramic and Titanium in the upcoming flagship smartphones like the Essential phone.

For those who are expressing their view about the Nokia 8 and its pricing, please have look at its competition. Nokia’s brand value is nothing less than that of the Apple, I personally think, Nokia 8 is a stellar smartphone that can give tough competition in the premium market.
