Chrome OS

There was a time when Chromebooks with built-in SIM cards were very popular. However, with time they fall out of style. Nowadays Chromebook’s functionality is becoming more and more offline. So, there is no need for users now to have always-on cellular connectivity as before. However, according to some reports, Google may be bringing back the cellular support for its Chrome OS devices. A recent code review reveals that the tech giant is bringing support for Project Fi and eSIM for Chromebooks.

New supports for Chrome OS:

The code review mentions a project codenamed as Hermes. This project will act as a bridge between the devices with eSIM and the carrier service providers. The project Hermes will also provide seamless integration with Project Fi. It will also provide an easy and portable API that users can use on different Chromebooks also. Since eSIM is a physical component of a device, so users will have to wait for new Chrome OS devices to hit the market.  However, it also not sure, whether Google will be offering Chrome-OS specific Project Fi plans or users will use the existing plans only.

Although, it is still very good to see eSIM in more new devices. The amount of space taken by these eSIMs makes them very much attractive. These SIM takes very less space even when compared with nano SIM. eSIM allows users to digitally configure their data and easily change networks. Google has been one of the main promoters for eSIM. Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were among the first devices to get support for eSIM. Apart from these smartphones, certain wearables also support eSIM.
