Google has offered a few ‘Go’ variants of their apps that are designed for entry-level devices running Android Go. This includes apps like Google Go, Google Assistant Go, Gallery Go, Google Maps Go, Google Camera Go and others. The company adds new apps to the lineup a lot of times and also recently released a stripped-down version of Gmail on Play Store.

The Gmail Go app brings a lighter experience of Gmail for all devices which features the essentials. According to a 9to5Google report, Gmail Go listing on Play Store is identical to the normal Gmail app except the new icon with ‘Go’ badge at the bottom. The listing also specifies that Gmail Go provides the “Gmail you love, now lighter and just fast” but still has the same screenshots like the normal version. The app is different from the full-blown Gmail app.

The UI of Gmail Go has the same structure like the normal app but it doesn’t have a few features. For example, the app doesn’t have a bottom bar because the Google Meet has not integrated with the app. The UI elements of the app are also flatter if compared to the normal Gmail app without layering and shadows. It uses a white outline for the search bar and Compose button to help them stand out.

The report also says that the frame rate of the app has been capped so that it results in a perceptible lag if users scroll through the app. This is probably a performance optimization that would benefit devices with low-end specifications. The app is not restricted to Android Go devices and is available for everyone. In case users doesn’t like using the normal Gmail app, they can try the Gmail Go by downloading it and if the app is not available on their devices, they can sideload it from APKMirror.
