Google has decided to pull Paytm out of its Play Store as it doesn’t abide by its policies.
Paytm has been India’s one of the best, if not the best startups in India in recent time. It has more than 50 million active users per month. It is among the top mobile wallet apps alongside Google Pay and Phone Pe in India.
But Google has removed Paytm from its Play store because Paytm is not following one policy. It is the policy of promoting online casinos and other gambling apps. Google strictly prohibits all these activities as sports betting is banned in India. IPL is around the corner. And hundreds of millions of Indians tune in to watch the IPL. There are many fantasy team making apps available which lets you build your fantasy teams. You get rewarded on the basis of team performance. Fantasy Sports is legal in some states of India.
Paytm, which promotes fantasy sports service within its marquee app, repeatedly violated Play Store’s policies. Paytm’s fantasy sports service Paytm First Games, which is also available as a standalone app, was also pulled from the Play Store.
As we all know, IPL will be telecasted on Disney+Hotstar. Google has also asked Hotstar to display a warning before running ads related to the fantasy sports app.
Suzanne Frey, Vice President, Product, Android Security and Privacy, said “We have these policies to protect users from potential harm. When an app violates these policies, we notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance,”
Apps that lead users to websites that promote fantasy sports or sports betting also regulate Google’s policies, according to an insider.
It is actually a good policy by Google. Sports betting is not legal in India, and it is a kind of gambling. Fantasy sports are a complete different thing. There are many fantasy apps which doesn’t ask for a single penny and still rewards you with good prizes. One of them is the FPL. Fantasy Premier League. It is related to the English Premier League.
Paytm has just tweeted about the situation they are facing. The tweet read
“Dear Paytm’ers, Paytm Android app is temporarily unavailable on Google’s Play Store for new downloads or updates. It will be back very soon. All your money is completely safe, and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as normal.”
Let’s see when the ban is uplifted and what changes Paytm has to make inorder to do that.
