As speculated, Huawei has launched its much anticipated next Generation mobile processor AKA Kirin 970. The Kirin 970 is a successor to Kirin 960 and offers Octa-core solution with 4 A73 cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and 4 A53 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz.

The chipsets consist of 5.5 billion transistors on a single square centimetre area. In terms of GPU, the chipset offers latest 12 core Mali G-72  CPU which offers 25% improved performance over the last generation Mali G-71 with 8 cores GPU structure. However, the chipset will only be dedicated to the Huawei branded smartphones only.

The processor will be manufactured by TSMC’s latest 10 nm architecture, for the greater energy efficiency features. This is the first mobile processor to offer a dedicated mobile AI computing platform within the chipset. With respect to the camera capabilities of the smartphone, the device offers dedicated Neural Processing unit (NPU) which enables the device to process up to 2000 images per second, whereas the normal CPU can only process up to 72 images per second.

The Kirin 970 is the first processor to offer cat.18 LTE bands which offer 1.2 Gbps down speed. In fact, even the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8890 offers maximum download speed of 1 Gbps. In terms of camera capabilities, the smartphones powered by the Kirin 970 Octa-core SoC will support HRD10, 4K video recording with up to 60 fps and 30 fps.

The company also confirmed that the upcoming smartphone Huawei Mate 10 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro will be powered by the same SoC.

Here is the official product statement from Richard Yu CEO Huawei:

“As we look to the future of smartphones, we’re at the threshold of an exciting new era. Mobile AI = On-Device AI + Cloud AI. HUAWEI is committed to developing smart devices into intelligent devices by building end-to-end capabilities that support coordinated development of chips, devices, and the cloud. The ultimate goal is to provide a significantly better user experience. The Kirin 970 is the first in a series of new advances that will bring powerful AI features to our devices and take them beyond the competition.”
