Although Lenovo and camera are not synonyms, to create more appeal of its new Mirage Solo stand-alone virtual reality headset, It has launched one. The Lenovo Mirage Camera is a dual lens wide angle camera suitable for everyone who wants to create immersive, fun to view stills and live video, all primarily designed for viewing through a VR headset.

Lenovo officially announced pricing and availability for the mirage camera, it is sold on Lenovo website priced at $300, The two 13-megapixel camera lenses take a 180-degree still photo — using Google’s VR180 format — or shoot 4K, 1440p, and 1080p resolution video.

The camera gives the advantages of not worrying about the composition, or where you place the camera. You can just point it in one direction, shoot, and the resulting image will pack in everything you see. There’s no viewfinder, so if you want to compose your shot, or make sure you’re getting everything in the picture, you’ll have to turn to the Mirage app on your phone.

There are three camera modes –

  • Still photos
  • Video
  • Live video streaming

There are LEDs which tells about the camera status-

  • The ring around the shutter button which glows Green while the camera is booting up, it takes approx 14 secs for coldboot.
  • The ring turns solid blue color when the camera is ready to take photos.

The VR180 app, which is available for Android and iOS. That connects via WiFi to the camera, and is used both to transfer photos and videos it has taken to your phone, and to offer a live preview of what the Mirage Camera is pointed at. The fairly low-res preview isn’t going to win awards for detail, but it’s enough to get a far better idea of whether your intended subject is suitably framed. It also allows you to tweak exposure, white balance, and ISO manually.

There’s also no way to trim your VR clips before you upload them, at least not on iOS. Instead, you have to wait until the whole clip has uploaded and then use YouTube’s desktop UI to do that. Even just lopping a few seconds off each end of a clip that way can involve waiting hours for YouTube to finish processing.
