Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi is mainly known for its stellar Redmi Note series and Redmi series. Spread among the early budget and mid-ranges, the phones are usually the epitome of value you will be able to get for every bit of money you spend. Xiaomi reserves the higher end specifications for phones under the Mi branding but that might change this year because Redmi’s first gaming smartphone is arriving with MediaTek Dimensity 1200.

The General Manager of Redmi in China, Mr. Lu Weibing said on Weibo that the brand will launch their first flagship gaming smartphone. The statements were made within the context of Dimensity 1200 launch and how Redmi will be the first OEM to ship a smartphone with new processor and strongly hinting that this might be the chip that can power the gaming phone. According to the Redmi philosophy, the pricing of the smartphone is being expected to be aggressive and making the entire proposition very enticing. It is not clear if the phone will be the gaming smartphone or something within the Redmi K-series lineup.

It must be noted that Dimensity 1200 has the same GPU (ARM Mali-G77MC9) like the Dimensity 1100, Dimensity 1000 Plus and Dimensity 1000. There are other changes that can be of benefit to a gaming smartphone like support for 168Hz refresh rate at FHD+ and also support for ray tracing through software. There is also MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 support on the new chip but the company did not properly detail what this bump up version will bring to the table and of the same can also make its way to the older Dimensity flagship chips because they bear the same GPU.

One thing that is completely clear is that the OEMs have a lot more faith in MediaTek’s Dimensity lineup than ever before and it is enough to dedicate a few firsts to their brand to the new flagship chips. It remains to be seen how Dimensity 1200 measures up to Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and Samsung Exynos 2100 but it does appear promising in terms of a value performer.
