Samsung gains patent for pressure sensitive fingerprint sensor

Vivo is the first tech company to showcase the working model with a fingerprint scanner embedded into the display. The Korean smartphone giant Samsung is also working towards implementing the same technology on their upcoming flagship smartphone. On the other hand, the Samsung has also gained a patent regarding the same technology with different methodologies.

Here are the details regarding the basic working principles of Samsung’s embedded fingerprint sensor on to the display. The patent is named as Electronic Device for Supporting the Fingerprint Verification and Operating Method Thereof, which gives an idea regarding how they have implemented a fingerprint scanner on to the normal touch panel (in this case the dual edge Super AMOLED touch panel).

The fingerprint sensor is combined with a pressure sensitive sensor, which enables the phone to differentiate between the normal touch and a specific touch made to use the embedded fingerprint sensor. As Samsung as already implemented a pressure sensitive sensor on to their Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, the company should not take more time to achieve a working prototype of this model.

According to leaks and rumours, the company is expected to unveil this technology along with the Samsung Galaxy S9 series or Samsung Galaxy Note 9 series. As there are only a few months left for the launch of Galaxy S9, there are very thin chances of this feature making into this S series smartphones. However, as the Galaxy Note 9 will debut in mid-2018, one can expect to see this feature on that model.

As Apple completely ditched fingerprint scanner, should Samsung the leader? Or having a fingerprint scanner does make sense? Personally, we feel Samsung should step up their game like Apple by implementing 3D facial recognition, as, the fingerprint scanner is no more a luxury and almost all the smartphones comes with one (from $100 to $1000). So, what do you think about the fingerprint scanner and its future? Share your views in the comment box regarding the same.
