As per the stats from the web analytics firm, StatCounter, finally the day has come when Windows 10 became the most popular version of Windows available in the market. The stats show 3 years old Windows 10 received 42.78 percent of the total desktop market whereas 8-years-old Windows 7 managed to score 41.86 percent. In contrast with the results, in the world’s largest democracy, India,Windows 7 still holds a strong position with 59.38 percent market share while Windows 10 managed to settle with mere 17.19 percent.

The figures in the report throw some light on the fact – Windows 10 saw an increase of 1.09 percent compared to December last year i.e., initially from 41.69 percent to 42.78 percent while Windows 7 lost 0.03 percentage points.

Though the Microsoft will be giving security updates for Windows 7 till the year 2020, the day is not far away when the gap would grow on a much faster rate as Windows 7 is gradually becoming obsolete especially since Microsoft pulled mainstream support for the OS.

Interestingly, much has changed in a year! The stats show that in January 2017, Windows 7 was the clear winner with 47.46 percent and Windows 10 stood with only 32.84 percent but a lot of things have changed since then. All the other versions of Windows have scored less than 10 percent when it comes to holding the market share. It is to be noted that Windows 8 holds the third position in this list with just 8.72 percent – surely didn’t manage to take much of users interest. Other than Windows 8, Windows XP still holds 3.36 percent of the total share whereas Windows Vista didn’t even score a single digit figure and managed only 0.74 percent.

It is to be noted that these stats from StatCounter Global Stats data is based on visits to websites running StatCounter’s code, and don’t necessarily reflect the Windows install base around the world. For example, according to Netmarketshare, Windows 10 is still well behind Windows 7.

In the month of November 2017, Microsoft had announced that the Windows 10 was running on more than 600 million active devices including desktops, tablets, Xbox One Console, HoloLens headsets, and Surface Hub devices, besides to some up to the date, Windows 10 based Smartphones. The number still looked well short of the original aim of having a billion users by the year 2018 but the stats are likely to grow in the nearby future!
