The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon be named Digital Communications Authority of India (DCRAI).

Now I should address you as Digital Communications Regulator,” said Manoj Sinha to TRAI chairman, RS Sharma while addressing the Annual General Meeting of TAIPA, a telecom infrastructure body.

Responding to the question about implementation of the changes Sinha said, “It will be soon”. In the same day, Manoj Sinha notified that the Department of Telecom will now be called as Digital Communications Commission.

The minister also pointed out the crucial role of telecom infrastructure in developing telecom market in India. He quoted, “It has enabled rapid rollout of towers from mere 1 lakh in 2006 to 4.71 lakh currently”.

As reported by Moneycontrol, “NDCP talks about creating tower authority. The policy very clearly lays down to prepare India for digital tomorrow.” Sharma said.

The TRAI chairman, R.S Sharma further said that NFCP 2018 is a transformational idea as it brings $100 billion investment along with 50Mbps download speeds. In order to set up a large number of towers across the country to facilitate 5g infrastructure, an assembly of ministers and IT secretary is required.

He quoted, “That is why telecom infrastructure is important. Therefore it is appropriate that we put together all our efforts, if you want to be ready for 5G, you need to put massive infrastructure.

Earlier this week, the government announced a new telecom policy, National Digital Communication Policy (NDCP) which is focused on attracting ₹7 lakh 26 crores investment and creating 4 million jobs in the telecom sector by 2022.
