The advent of the global pandemic, Covid-19, has greatly affected the health system in globally. Following the first wave of the covid-19 pandemic in India, there has been a consistent increase in the rate of cases across the country. Reports from different states and union territories so far have not been encouraging which may cause a worry or two. Presently, India is experiencing the fifth wave since it was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11th March, 2020.

India’s COVID-19 cases in numbers

In the past week (29th Dec 2021 – 4th Jan 2022), the situation update report has shown an increase in the ranges of new cases of covid-19 from 8% to 100%. From New Delhi, 117,100 fresh covid-19 cases (28% increase rate) were reported which have now taken the total cases of Covid-19 in India to 35,226,386 with 3,43,71,845 recoveries and 4,83,178 deaths. In addition to the present situation, a new variant of the coronavirus has emerged through its symptoms have been reported to be milder, people are advised to follow the covid-19 protocol to contain the spread. Currently, a total of 3,007 cases of Omicron has been reported across the 23 states of which 1, 199 have made total recovery according to the data from the Union Health Ministry. Maharashtra has been shown to be the worst-affected state followed by Delhi with 876 and 513 cases of Omicron respectively.

What are the safety measures taken?

In an attempt to contain the spread of the virus, different measures were introduced by the government which include speeding up vaccination across the country, movement restrictions such as night curfew and minimizing the rate of social gatherings. For international travelers, a compulsory one-week home quarantine with a Covid-19 test at the end of the quarantine was instituted irrespective of the countries you are coming from. However, based on the recent increase in the rate of infections, the government have cancelled all international flights scheduled from December 15th  as this will ensure adequate control over the disease spread.

The union government has also reviewed the progress of vaccination and the preparedness of the public health for the new coronavirus variant. The ongoing vaccination process is quite impressive as 1.50 billion doses of the approved vaccines have been administered. In India, a good number of people have received at least a dose of the vaccine (86%) while 61% of the population eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine have been fully vaccinated. The ministry of health has also introduced a platform for online booking of the Covid-19 vaccine for eligible persons as this will enable easy access to the vaccine by the general public and also ensure compliance.

Role in the Pandemic world

Despite the devastating impact of the pandemic and its toll on the economic status, India has tirelessly fought to protect its population by ensuring that the majority of its citizens are fully inoculated – highly commendable. Nevertheless, as a major supplier of crucial medications in the global market, they have more recently invested so much in the production and supply of the Covid-19 vaccines to other countries.
