Kabul, May 13: Government of Afghanistan has on Monday expressed disappointment over the Taliban’s repeated refusal to call for a truce in war-torn Afghan region during the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan.

According to ANI news reports, Afghan chief executive Abdullah Abdullah was quoted by TOLO news as saying, “Unfortunately, the fighting is still ongoing during Ramadhan. We wanted a ceasefire during this month, but so far it’s not agreed.”

He continued adding, “No major steps have been taken on the peace process so far.”

Abdullah’s comments have come after the Taliban reiterated its refusal to a ceasefire suggestion by Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani’s Loya Jirga grand assembly.

Last month, the Taliban attacked several regions in Afghanistan, especially targeting the Afghan government and armed forces.

Hours after announcing annual spring offensive in the region, the Taliban attempted attacks near the office of the district governor. But however, they were “pushed back and defeated” by armed forces.

During the attack, two Afghan personnel were reported dead, along with some 27 Taliban militants.

Meanwhile, the United States officials and Afghan leaders held discussions over issues pertaining to Afghan-US civilian assistance review, as well as, the presidential elections.

Afghan president and Alice Wells, US principal deputy assistant secretary of state for south and central Asia, also held a meeting to discuss the peace process and the progress and outcomes of the Loya Jirga for peace.
