A high level meeting on the UN reforms was hosted by the US President Donald Trump on Monday in New York. Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj who is on a week long trip to the US also attended the meeting.

While addressing the meeting the US President expressed the need to bring in reforms in the United nation, to keep up with the pace of the changing times. He said that the UN holds great potential but the bureaucracy was stopping it from working according to the potential it posses. He also added that it is now time to keep pace with the changing time the UN should now include expansion of the world body’s permanent and non-permanent members also.

The US President Donald Trump who was once a hard critic of the United Nation Organisation called for the need for reform in the organisation. The idea was initially suggested by India years back and has been always expressing the same from a long time.

After the meeting, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar in his statement to the reporters said that India has always supported the idea of reformation in the world organisation to include the expansion of permanent and non permanent members, to match with the changing times. “We have consistently maintained the same line,” he said. India has extended its support to the efforts of the US President for the reformation.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders also in her statement to the press confirmed that Donald Trump has extended his support to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterre’s reform agenda for the UN. Sarah said that the US President was happy to join together around 130 countries to make the reformation in UN a success and eradicate the efficiency in its performance due to bureaucracy.

The UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres said that “We are reforming our peace and security architecture to ensure we are stronger in prevention, more agile in mediation, and more effective and cost-effective in peacekeeping operations.” He further added that the UN is aiming to reform its development system to attain the goal of 2030 of Sustainable Development and UN’s contribution to a fair globalisation. He further added that the UN is working towards becoming a more agile, more effective, stronger in prevention and cost effective in peacekeeping operations.

“We need to bring decision-making closer to the people we serve; trust and empower managers; reform cumbersome and costly budgetary procedures and eliminate duplicative structures,” he added.

US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said that it is the beginning of a new process and marked it as a great day. Currently, 130 have extended their support for the reformation. There are total 193 members in the United nation and  Nikki said that the mission is to get the complete consensus of all the members regarding the reformation in UN.

“We are always stronger when we speak with one voice, and the future of this institution is worth the extra mile,” she said.
