Shared Hosting

shared hosting

As the name suggests, shared hosting is a type of web hosting where one server is configured in such a way that many people do use it at the same time to host their websites. The bandwidth, storage, and RAM is equally shared among the users using shared hosting from a particular server.

The shared hosting server is managed by the hosting company which automates the process of users signing up and hosting on a particular server. It is totally managed and you will not need any programming or coding knowledge to make your website up and running. The cost of a shared hosting account is generally very less and it costs less than 10 US dollars per month, which makes it very cheap and reliable solution if your business is not very big and you are not expecting may visitors to visit your websites.

The hosting environment is pretty simple that might tempt you to go for a shared hosting account. Almost all the popular online scripts are available as one-click install and that is what makes your work so simple when you are setting up a new account. The interface is mainly Cpanel which is very well organized that even newbies can get used to it within no time.

While signing up for a shared hosting account, companies often offer unlimited storage and bandwidth, but technically, that cannot be possible. Every shared hosting account is hosted on a server and server itself has some limits and that limit is equally distributed among all the users who are hosting their websites on the same server, in that case, no one can expect to get unlimited bandwidth and storage. I have used around 4 shared hosting servers and every time I did have the same problem. If you have many users online at a particular time, then hosting company will give you a warning telling you are using more bandwidth which is a threat to other websites hosted on the same server and that is where all the problems start.

Shared hosting can be termed as a reliable and cheaper option, but always it is not the best. Basically, it depends on your needs as well as the budget.

Virtual Private Server (VPS)

The organizations which consider that a shared hosting is not working out for them anymore or they are in the initial phase and planning to have a large number of users and subscribers from the initial stage, in those cases, VPS works best for them.

VPS is again like shared hosting, where multiple accounts are hosted on the same server, but as the name suggests, it is virtually a private server for you.

After signing up for VPS, you get a complete private interface which is exclusively for you. The configuration of your VPS is usually what you pay for. So you need not to worry about the performance and the value for money, because all the resources, memory and bandwidth will be the private property of yours and you will have all the rights to use it.

Using a virtual private server (VPS) might be a bit tricky for you if you have always used the shared hosting. You might not get that fully managed Cpanel, but believe me, that is just to make sure that your files and websites are not compromised and shared on other servers. You have full rights to install the software of your choice and it is an added advantage. You can configure the OS and other options in the way you want.

Having the complete control over your resources helps in another way. If you sign up for an entry level VPS now and then later you realize that your needs are exceeding your resources, then you can always scale up the resources i.e. The RAM, hard disk space or the memory.

Shared hosting vs Virtual Private Server (VPS)

While we come to the comparison, I think I have already described it in much detailed way. There are a few points which I get as the comparison of Shared hosting and VPS

  • Shared hosting is relatively cheaper while Virtual Private Server costs you more.
  • Shared hosting provider often promise unlimited bandwidth and storage but usually, the user does not get that, however, in the case of Virtual Private Server, user gets what he paid for i.e. Promised configuration.
  • Shared hosting is a shared platform where many websites are hosted on the same server, in case of Virtual Private Server, there are many websites, but all websites have a proper unique IP and hosting address which gives you a completely private environment.
  • In shared hosting, the configuration of the main server is distributed equally among all the users using that server while in VPS, the server is configured particularly for your needs and the configuration remains intact.

These were some of the main differences between these 2 types of hosting. If I have to choose one between any of these, I will surely go for Virtual Private Server because I get more control on my websites host and better flexibility and performance. Before you go and choose any of these, you are always advised to check VPS hosting reviews to make sure which will be the Best VPS Host for you.

I hope this post was useful. Do let me know if you have any doubts and I will try my level best to solve that out for you.
