Panama City: An earthquake measured 6.2 magnitudes on the Ritcher scale has on Sunday rattled southwest Panama alongside the border with Costa Rica, causing severe damages to buildings and wounding people, the authorities said.

According to Reuters news reports, there weren’t any immediate reports of fatalities. The quake jolted some 7 kilometres (4 miles) southeast of Panama’s Plaza de Caisan with a depth of 37 km (23 miles), as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

The Panamanian authorities stated that no tsunami alert was raised from the quake.

In a tweet, Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela said some houses, buildings and shops were damaged due to the quake and that a woman was wounded in Puerto Armuelles port of Panama when the earthquake caused her home’s ceiling to cave in.

“Due to the magnitude of the event, here has been minor damage in homes and shops. So far we only have news one woman injured when the roof of her house collapsed in Puerto Armuelles,” President Juan Carlos Varela said on Twitter.

Puerto Armuelles port happens to be near the epicentre of the earthquake. A local police spokesperson said various buildings have been caused damaged but however, there were no preliminary reports of fatalities.
