Algerian doctors called for mass protests against President Abdulaziz Bouteflika during the nation’s independence day ceremony, ratcheting up the pressure over the president.

According to Reuters news reports, the independent collective of Algerian medical residents (CAMRA) has urged all medical students to participate in the mass protests and denounce the “ruling gangs”, according to a statement released on Monday.

The president who is in power for the past 20 years, has announced last week that if he re-elected this year then he will rule for only one year instead of five years. He postponed the presidential election and has promised to adopt a new constitution under a reform programme.

However, the changes have not brought any cease to demonstrations on-going from the last three weeks against the president.

Boualem Amora, a leader of an education union, told reporters: “We will not hold discussions with this system, we belong to the people and the people said ‘No’ to the system.”

The country’s prime minister, Noureddine Bedouin, has planned to announce a new cabinet early this week.
