While celebrating Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s decision to step down from the upcoming April’s presidential election, hundreds of protesters have demanded the immediate resignation of Bouteflika from the post.

According to ANI news reports, protesters took the demonstrations to the streets on Monday night to celebrate Bouteflika’s resignation decision, which one protester telling Al-Jazeera news agency: “The protests have paid off. This is a small victory of the Algerian people over the regime.”

Bouteflika, who has ruled the nation since 1999, stated: “There will be no fifth term. There was never any question about it for me. Given my state of health and age, my last duty towards the Algerian people was always contributing to the foundation of a new Republic.”

During announcing his decision, Bouteflika postponed the presidential election which was originally scheduled to take place on April 18.

He has said that along with setting up a date for elections, an independent and inclusive conference will be overseeing the transition of the power. They are slated to submit a fresh constitution to the voters in voting, Al-Jazeera reported.

Another protester said: “Algeria is turning into a monarchy against the people’s will. We are now dealing with a president so eager to cling on power that he will stay in office until a date nobody knows.”
