Amid controversy over the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, China’s foreign minister on Tuesday, warned any “bullying” against any of the Chinese citizen.

While delivering a speech in Beijing, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said, “The safety and security of Chinese compatriots are our priority, China will never sit idly by and ignore any bullying that violates the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens,” without giving any direct reference to the case of Huawei.

Huawei CFO was arrested in Canada on December 1, over the charges of dealing with Iran market, despite US sanctions. The detention raised the tensions between US-China. Meng Wanzhou was facing extradition to US.

Yi further said, “We will fully safeguard the legitimate rights of Chinese citizens and return fairness and justice to the world.”

In a daily briefing, Chinese foreign minister spokesperson Lu Kang said, “The Canadian government did not do this and the Chinese government learned this through other channels.”

Citing the tensions raised between the United States and China, Wang called up on Washington to stop expecting any further trade between the both countries and termed it as a “zero-sum game”.

Wang said, “Take a more positive look at China’s development, and constantly expand the space and prospects for mutual benefit.”

Wang further added saying, “There is no need to artificially create new opponents, and an even greater need to avoid self-fulfilling prophecies.”
