A day after Sudanese transitional army council head Awad Ibn Auf replaced President Omar al-Bashir after his forced resignation, Auf stepped down from his post on Friday.

Auf was quoted as saying, “I, the head of the military council, announce I am giving up the post.”

In an official statement, Auf stated: “This is for the benefit of our nation, without having to look at special interests, big or small that may impede its progress. I would like to recommend that you work together and reach a solution very speedily.”

According to ANI news reports, lieutenant general Abdel Fattah Burhan was named to replace Auf and become the head of the transitional committee.

Sudanese people protesting against the army leader’s forcibly taking over Bashir’s position after ousting him, was received relief with Auf’s resignation announcement. Meanwhile, Burhan, the new head, was scheduled to address Sudanese people on Saturday.

Thousands of Sudanese protested and remained camped put outside military headquarters in the country’s capital on Friday demanding a transition to the civilian rule, ignoring a state of emergency declared by the military amid President Bashir forced resignation by the country’s army.

The military has said they will look towards a transitional period, and as per this, it will be imposing a three-month curfew in the country, including suspension of the constitution.

It said, the army will be in power for a maximum two years, but could only last a month if sought a transition to civilian rule smoothly.
