Austrian Chancellor Proposes “Axis of the Willing” against Illegal Immigrants in Europe

Following his meeting in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz decided to meet with Horst Seehofer, the German Interior Minister, who is a well-known conservative Bavarian minister, to talk about mass immigration in the Parliament, on the 13th of June. During this appointment, Chancellor Kurz visibly voiced his support towards tackling illegal migration within the EU.

After his conference, Chancellor Kurz announced to the reporters that it should be within everyone’s best interests to form an “axis of the willing” between Rome, Vienna, and Berlin, which would work together to win the fight against illegal migration to their countries as well as all of Europe. The main aim of this idea of an Axis would be to develop a means against defending the continent against yet another refugee catastrophe like that of July 2015, and to regulate the influx of migrants arriving within their countries around a minimum number.

Chancellor Kurz’s ratification comes as Minister Seehofer was announced to have signed an alliance against illegal immigration with his Italian and Austrian counterparts. Chancellor Merkel and Seehofer had been involved in a constant dispute over the passing of a new German “migration master plan” as proposed by the Interior Minister, which would deny the entry into Germany for all migrants who have already applied for asylum in some other country in Europe. Hence, in a modified form of his master plan, as part of the plan to create the Axis, it was also announced on Wednesday that German and Austrian police forces would be stationed at Albania in order to prevent any further use of a well-known migration route into the Balkans.
