Washington, June 17: House of Representatives has on Monday moved legislation seeking to advance the India-US strategic ties and bring India on par with the US’ “closest allies and partners”.

According to ANI news reports, the United States has introduced the HR 2123 Bill on April 8 for making some “appropriate modifications” by Congressman Joe Wilson in the American Armed Control Export Act for purposes.

The bill seeks a joint assessment to be conducted by the secretary of defence and secretary of state “of the extent to which India possesses capabilities to support and carry out military operations of mutual interest to the United States and India”.

The legislation also calls for a valuation of the “defence export control regulations and policies that need appropriate modification, in recognition of India’s capabilities and its status as a major defence partner”.

While citing the US-India joint statement, “The United States and India: Enduring Global Partners in the 21st Century”, the legislation notes the US recognizes India as one of the “major defence partners”, and enhanced defence ties between the two nations could act an “anchor of stability”.

The US state department, under the 1976 Arms Export Control Act, authorizes the export and import of defence services and equipment to other nations.
