London July 29: Britain told Iran on Monday if it needs to “come of the dark” it must pursue universal guidelines and discharge a British-hailed oil tanker seized by its powers in the Gulf.

Iranian commandos on July 19 held onto the Stena Impero close to the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most significant waterways for the oil shipments. Some two weeks after British powers caught an Iranian oil tanker close Gibraltar blamed for breaching sanctions on Syria.

“If the Iranians want to come of the dark and be accepted as a responsible member of the intentional community they need to adhere to a rules-based system of the international community,” Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told Sky News.

“You cannot go about detaining unlawfully foreign vessels.”

Britain a week ago kicked-off deporting a warship to escort all British-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, an adjustment in policy reported on Thursday after the administration recently said it didn’t have assets to do as such.

The Defense Ministry said a subsequent warship, the HMS Duncan, had landed in the Gulf to help the entry of British-flagged sends through the strait, joining the HMS Montrose, Reuters reported.

Raab made his remarks on Monday as Iran’s top Revolutionary Guards distributed footage purportedly demonstrating the Guards cautioning off a British warship during the seizure of the Stena Impero.

The video, distributed by the semi-official Tasnim news organization, contains film of the catch of the tanker, indicating Guards abseiling onto the deck from a helicopter, with the sound chronicle superimposed.

Press TV, Iran’s state-run English language news channel, distinguished the British warship referenced in the trade as the Montrose.

“You are required not to interfere in these issues,” the Guards’ navy envoy says.

“This is British warship foxtrot two three six. I am in the vicinity of an internationally recognized strait with a merchant vessel in my vicinity conducting transit passage,” a voice with a British accent reply.
