Theresa-May-Brexit

Britain’s two main political parties have suffered a drubbing in a local election on Friday as voters expressed their frustration over a Brexit deadlock.

According to Dawn news reports, British Prime Minister Theresa May’s ruling Conservative party has lost control over various local authorities, as well as, hundreds of sears, but also, the main opposition Labour Party lost its ground, with voters turning to independents and smaller parties in Thursday’s poll.

The prime minister said, “There was a simple message from yesterday’s elections to both us and the Labour Party: just get on and deliver Brexit.”

Britain’s divided members of parliament have not been able to agree over a divorce deal proposed by May with the European Union (EU), with these two main parties in dialogues over breaking a Brexit impasse.

“This is a difficult time for our party and these election results are a symptom of that,” May told the Welsh Conservative Conference.

Thursday’s poll outcome doesn’t bode well for both Labour and Conservative parties ahead of the European Parliament elections which are slated to take place

The centrist Liberal Democrats and left-wing Greens — both anti-Brexit — were the big winners, along with independent candidates.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said, “Of course we wanted to do better,” adding he was “very sorry” for his party’s losses.

The leader further stated there was now “a huge impetus” for Brexit talks between his party and the Tories to succeed.
