The United Kingdom, France and the United States have moved to United Nations security council (UNSC) to ban Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror outfit head Masood Azhar and designate him as a global terrorist.

This measure comes amid escalated tension between India and Pakistan over Islamabad’s refusal and diplomacy over terror organizations working from its soil under its watch.

The proposal by the P3 countries to impose ban on Masood Azhar comes hours after Indian external minister Sushma Swaraj raised the Pulwama terror attack issue during her meeting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, saying the JeM terror outfit has been banned by the UN and several others, while telling Wang, “This terrorist attack is the direct result of the impunity and cover provided to the JeM and its leaders by the Pakistani side.”

If this fresh proposal gets passed, then Pakistani based and backed JeM chief Masood Azhar will get tagged with “UN-designated global terrorist”, which will further subject Azhar to a global travel ban, arms embargo and asset freeze all over the globe.

The fresh proposal by France, UK and US, moved on Wednesday by three permanent veto-wielding members of the UNSC, will also get supported by Russia, as Moscow has in past supported a global ban on Masood Azhar, according to NDTV news reports.

However, all eyes will be over China, the greatest ally of Pakistan, which has reiterated its refusal or blocked several similar proposals in the past.

The UNSC sanctions committee has ten working days in order to consider the fresh proposal of a global ban on Masood Azhar submitted by the three strong UNSC member.

JeM terror organization has marked its largest and latest terror – Pulwama terror attack – in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14 over Indian paramilitary bus, which has claimed the lives of about 44 CRPF personnel during the suicide bombing attack.

The Masood Azhar-led JeM has carried out a series of terror attacks in India – The 2001 terror attack on the Indian Parliament, the 2016 Pathankot terror attack, the 2016 Uri terror attack, and 2019 Pulwama terror attack to name a few.

Meanwhile, Islamabad has been labelled as “A country which uses terror as an instrument of state policy” by experts.
