Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong meeting German FM Heiko Mass

The prevailing Pro-Democratic Protests in Hong Kong has managed to garner the attention of the world or atleast some people. Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Mass on Monday had met with Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong in Berlin.

This has not sat well with China who have stated previously that it would not allow any international involvement in the internal matter of China. The Hong Kong Protest which started in July has been observed closely by the government in China.

Wong, who has been one of the prominent faces of the Hong Kong Protests was in Berlin to attend a human rights event organized by a German newspaper. The activist was detained at the Hong Kong airport for almost 24 hours in what the authorities in Hong Kong believed was the violation of his bail. Joshua Wong has been on bail ever since he was arrested for his involvement and participation in the protests.

The activist had met German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass and urged the authorities to help the protestors who have been rallying for almost three months. China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Hua Chunying in her daily brefing said, “China has already lodged stern representations with the German side.”

The timing of the meeting has awkward, as it was only a few days after the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to China. The spokesperson again reiterated China’s stand of Hong Kong being an internal matter.

German Chancellor during her visit did show her support to the ‘One Country, Two System’ formula under which control of Hong Kong was handed over to the Chinese. The Chancellor has been widely criticized for not taking a strong stand for the protestors.

Germany’s permission to Wong to travel and meet the government officials has irked the chinese government as it sends “wrong signals” to Beijing. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam had also warned the interational order to not intervene in the domestic matters of Hong Kong.

The protests have gripped the city after widespread fears of the Hong Kong Autonomy being slowly and categorically coming under the threat of Chinese intervention
