Beijing, Oct 1: China’s President Xi Jinping has on Tuesday said his nation will remain committed to its “one country, two systems” policy with regard to Hong Kong.

China is today celebrating its 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic with a massive military parade in capital Beijing to mark the Communist Party’s seven-decade ruling in the nation.

Addressing an event celebrating the National Day, Xi said, “Moving forward, we must adhere to the ‘peaceful unification’ and ‘one country, two systems’ principles, maintain prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macau, promote the peaceful development of relations between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait and continue to strive for the full unification of our homeland.”

Moreover, Taiwan’s government has on Tuesday condemned Chinese“dictatorship” on Beijing’s national day celebration, stating the nation was a pure threat to peace and stability and was paving excuses for its military expansion.

Jinping said China would always promote the peaceful development with the government of Taiwan and “continue to strive for the motherland’s complete reunification”.

Reacting to Jinping’s comment and the military parade, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said the nation would never accept China’s “one country, two systems” policy.

China has been pushing Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen to accept its “one country, two systems” mechanism. The council also said Beijing could not bully Taipei to accept its program.

Moreover, Hong Kong has been facing a series of mass protests, since the past few months, against a controversial extradition bill that would allow suspects in the city to be sent to mainland China for court prosecution.

On the occasion of China’s national day, Hong Kong protesters took to the streets of the city and clashed with riot police.

Hong Kong Police fired tear gas and water cannons in efforts to disperse anti-government protesters – found throwing petrol bombs near the central authority offices. The security forces also ordered the clearance of the Legislative Council building that was trashed by the protesters a week ago.

On Tuesday, Riot Police fired live rounds at pro-China rallies and a man was reported shot in the chest while demonstrating in the Tsuen Wan district, two pro-democracy lawmakers said.

At Golden Bauhinia Square, several Hong Kong government officials and their guests watched China’s National Day event celebration, while leader Carrie Lam attended the live commemoration in Beijing with more than 200 legislators of her government.

China has in recent weeks ratcheted up the pressure in the city after it was disclosed Beijing’s armed forces were summoning across its border in Shenzhen, according to Al-Jazeera.

Beijing had also cautioned it wouldn’t “sit by and watch” as the civil unrest in the territory continues against a controversial extradition bill that would allow Hong Kong to send suspects to mainland China for court prosecution.
