Top diplomat of the Chinese government has on Friday issued a stern warning against interference in Venezuela and its crisis or imposing any sanctions on the nation, saying that history had offered a main, clear lesson about not “following the same old disastrous road”.

According to Reuters news reports, China has repeatedly called on foreign nations not to interfere in Venezuela’ internal matters. However, most of the nations have recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president of the country.

The United States has vowed to “expand the net” of sanction over Venezuela and has identified banks supporting embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for hiding and transferring money, to slap banks with sanctions.

While responding to a question over whether China still recognized Maduro or had had contacts with the opposition, state councillor Wang Yi said the independence and sovereignty of the Latin American countries should be respected.

On the sidelines of the Chinese parliamentary meeting, at his annual news conference, Wang said, “The internal affairs of every country should be decided by their own people. External interference and sanctions will only exacerbate the tension situation, and allow the law of the jungle to once again run amuck.”

Wang said China-Latin America relations had achieved heights of progress and were not aimed at any “third party”. Diplomatic and bilateral ties between the two sides were in both’s long-term interests, and shouldn’t be subjected to “warrantless and interference and criticism”.

Wang said, “There’s already enough of such lessons from history, and the same old disastrous road should not be followed.”

Wang added Beijing continues to support both Maduro and the opposition to seek a political solution via peaceful dialogues in order to ensure the nation’s stability and citizens’ safety.
