The world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitting country, China has decided to boost in its efforts to help the fight against climate change after 2020. At the United Nations Climate Action Summit, China has pledged to use its Belt and Road Initiative for cooperation to fight global warming.
The issue of climate change has been of grave concern and the increasing temperature of the planet is not a good sign. Many countries have been trying to work together in order to curb their emissions and maintain their pledge as done during the Paris Climate Accords.
China also had announced its idea to start a ‘green’ Belt and Road Initiative in order to boost co-operation with the global powers to deal with the challenges proposed by the worsening climate situation.
This comes within weeks when many citizens around the globe had gone on a strike, voicing their concerns over the inability of the governments to act on a serious issue like climate change. China and India have been considered as a major player given their rising carbon emissions which have fast-forwarded the issue of climate change.
During the Climate Summit in New York, China had proposed its plan to re-evaluate its climate policy and show that it is moving forward with the ‘highest possible ambition’. According to a report in Reuters, this has further raised hope regarding the fast-tracking of its target date of carbon emissions.
China had pledged that by 2030, it would have reached its highest level in greenhouse gasses emission, a pledge taken during the Paris Climate Accord.
This also provides hope for stronger climate change commitments during a course of five-year. Currently, the country has said that it will review its climate policies after 2020. During its statement, the representative of China had brought forth the idea that it will start 150 initiatives to cut down its carbon emission by a number of 10 to 12 billion by means of natural solutions like reforestation and expansion of wetlands etc.
