Canadian government said on Friday, China had released the third Canadian citizen, who was detained in Beijing earlier this month on December 19. She has returned to Canada after being released from custody in China.

According to news reports, Canadian government spokesperson did not give further details over detained citizen release and return to Canada. However, citizen was identified as Canadian teacher Sarah McIver.

Chinese foreign ministry, earlier this month, has said McIver has been undergoing “administrative punishment” for working much illegally.

Sarah McIver was the third Canadian citizen who was detained by China amid arrest of Huawei’s chief executive officer (CEO) Meng Wanzhou in Canada. But however, a Canadian official said there were no relation between the arrest of McIver and Meng.

During the arrest of Wanzhou, China has repeatedly told Canada to correct its mistake and release Wanzhou and warned them, if not released, face unspecified consequences.

According to news reports, the Canadian foreign ministry has on December 19, said that China has detained the third Canadian citizen. China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, that time, said that she is still unaware of the act and report.

Amid Huawei chief executive officer (CFO) Meng Wanzhou arrest in Canada, China has last week detained two of Canadian citizen accused of harming the national security of China. Two detained Canadian citizens were – former diplomat Michael Kovrig and a businessman Michael Spavor.
