China is taking steps to strengthen bilateral ties between India and China and is keen to import high quality farm products such as grapes, pomegranate, fish oil and fish meal, and soya meal from India. Recently, China had decided to import raw sugar and non-basmati rice from India.

In a meeting held last week, headed by Chinese vice minister Hu Wei, India has pushed to export sapota, milk, bovine meat and okra to China. An official said, “India is looking for China’s support on exporting okra, sapota (chikoo), milk and bovine meat to it. China is interested in our mango and rapeseed.”

An official said, “To achieve balance of trade, they are looking at high quality agricultural products and have agreed to look positively at India’s demands.”

India’s export rate to China has leveled to $33 billion in the session 2017-2018, whereas the import rate to India from China remained at $76.2 billion.

However, Beijing made a clear case for New Delhi to resume its apples, pears, milk and dairy product imports from China, even after the repeated test’s result which found pests in the shipments.

China has asked exporters of grapes to get registered with their authorities each year, though India has paused for the registration and sough a longer validity time period for registration in order to not let the process of registration to happen every year.

Beijing has decided to send their teams to India in order to examine pomegranate and grape orchards and also soy processing units in December. China decided to send a Chinese team to India to inspect grape orchards in this week, whereas inspection on soyabean will take place from December 9 to December 18. During December 10-17, processing units with pomegranate orchards would get examined, in fact China expects pomegranate’s process to be completed by 2019 only.

In 2008 Beijing’s dairy products went suspended due to melamine found in those items. China is now keen to import caseinate (milk protein) in exchange to the export of its milk and dairy products.
